I’m going to be mean for a second: you look like you just rolled out of bed. Perhaps you don’t care, you do you girlfriend! However, if you wish to improve your outfits, I have some fruitful tips for you.
Tidbit #1- Make sure you match!
Honey, those dark blue sweatpants with the hot pink sweatshirt DO NOT MATCH. Your outfit looks like a neon sign. Start by staring at a color wheel!
You do not have to give up bright colors if you prefer them; in fact, minimalism is a total drag! However, you need balance.
Begin by thinking about your favorite colors/the colors you wear the most. Then, figure out colors that complement your main hue. For example, if you were to wear a green shirt, brown accessories/footwear would match since they are both earth tones. Wearing complementary colors brings cohesiveness to your outfit and makes you look more put together (even when you aren’t)!
Tidbit #2- Play with silhouette
We know you want to be comfy. But you can be comfortable with style! Let’s say you are wearing baggy sweatpants. A cropped or more form-fitting sweater would balance out the look. Can’t wear tighter clothes because of modesty, or you just don’t want to? No problem! There are plenty of ways to play with fabrics that suit the look you are going for. In the warmer months, play with more flowy/breathable pieces–you’ll look like a very fashionable ghost. For the darker months we are in currently, have fun experimenting with varying layers: a brown vest over a white mockneck? Why not! In a world of rectangles, you will be the coolest, original abstract shape.
Tidbit #3- Don’t fall for consumerism
Stop buying heaps of clothing. I know it’s cliché, but quality over quantity ALWAYS. A few staple pieces in your wardrobe are all you need to create an (almost) endless combination of chic outfits. Money does not buy style (seriously, we all saw that recent Balenciaga drop); only a good eye does. By expanding your horizons (and closing your wallet) you will become a true fashion icon.
Tidbit #4- Be Bold
Teenagers can be cruel. Trust me, I’m one too and have had some not-nice interactions with my peers. However, are you going to let some mean girl with a bad spray tan make you feel intimidated into conformity? I’ll answer that question for you: HECK NO! I wore tights with a fish design on them to school once. You know what? I ate that outfit up, and I’d wear it again. If you want to dress goth, emo, or like Regina George–go for it! As long as your outfit is school-appropriate, no one should dim your sparkle.
Tidbit #5- Creativity is Key
The last piece to a perfect outfit is imagination. Trends can only do so much; it’s up to YOU to create something unique. Overall, fashion is subjective. Even if you hate someone else’s outfit, it’s their truth. True fashion isn’t about the fabric, but the feeling.
