The MET Gala is an annual event run by Anna Wintour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan, New York.
The event, referred to by many as “Fashion’s Biggest Night,” takes place on the first Monday of May every year. For this event, Wintour invites a list of many celebrities, new and old. This year, some of the biggest names included on this list were Madonna, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, and Rihanna.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, also known as The MET, which gave the MET Gala its name, is the largest museum in the country. As well as this, it is the most comprehensive museum in the country. The MET holds over 2 million pieces of art, some dating back to around 5,000 years ago.
Though the museum is the host of the event, the red carpet outside the museum is the most talked-about part. Since what happens inside the museum is mostly private, people pay attention to what is going on outside, specifically the outfits that attendees are wearing.
A lesser talked about moment of the night is the performance inside the museum. Every year, a different singer in attendance will perform for the other celebrities attending. This year’s performer was Sabrina Carpenter, and some performers from past years include Ariana Grande, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga.
To add on, every year, there is a different dress code for the event. This year’s dress code was “Fashion is Art.” Some dress codes from years prior include “Camp,” “Heavenly Bodies,” and “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” For attendees, the point of this year’s dress code is that their body is a blank canvas, and they have to wear an outfit that paints their canvas with a moving piece of art.
At an event of this prestige, it would probably be expected that everyone there follows the dress code. However, the number of people who follow the dress code is usually pretty small. As usual, this year, there were only a handful of people who were on theme. As well as this, barely any of the men who attend this event follow the dress code. Most just wear some form of plain colored suit. Despite the fact that many people do not follow the dress code, the people who do follow the dress code always look stunning. For example, Heidi Klum, who is known for her iconic costumes, took the dress code “Fashion is Art” and followed it literally and stunningly, dressing up as a statue.
As usual, this year’s MET Gala was an iconic event in fashion that introduced many important fashion moments into the vast world of fashion.
