Wicked: For Good is by far one of the most anticipated movies of this year. Is it worth the watch, the anticipation? Featuring stars such as Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Ethan Slater, Jonathan Bailey and Jeff Goldblum, this movie is hard to miss.
The first movie was perfect. It was stunning both visually and emotionally and in every way possible. The second one? Stellar. The production, design, and quality overall is up kept, despite some online dissent about costuming. The main concerns about this movie are actually the actors themselves and how dangerously thin they have gotten. Many are being skeptical of the means of production and the behind-the-scenes, because it seems as though the entire main cast lost an unhealthy amount of weight. Nonetheless, I won’t belabour that topic. The movie itself was paced well, and had a nice, full-circle ending. A lot of questions that arose from the first movie also made a lot more sense (i.e. No one mourns the wicked, the retelling of the Wizard of Oz itself) following the second movie’s release.
Now, there will be no spoilers. But, I will say, a lot of people have said this movie was sad, tear-jerking, even. Personally? There were lots of funny moments. And sure, while the ending is sad, and while you might walk away sad, I can’t say I was depressed during the movie. The acting is phenomenal, yet again. Any flaw can be attributed to the script or director, and is no flaw of the actors themselves. For example, the color-grading is significantly worse, and some major plot points are glossed over. The one other big thing I can think of pointing out is the inconsistency of some of the characters. I mean, Glinda might be a bit air-headed, but she’s not stupid.
You won’t get bored while watching this movie. I feel like there are so many comical moments and just plenty of moments of almost slack-jawed shock, so there’s really no chance of boredom. Musical movie adaptations are known to be quite underwhelming. However, Wicked is not like all the other adaptations. It’s different, it’s fantastic, and it’s relatable–on some far off level if you squint a little. Also, the whole movie and cast is so meme-able. I’ve already seen Cynthia Erivo made into countless reaction pictures, and Michelle Yeoh’s “M M, Madame Morrible, flip it around, W W, Wicked Witch!” everywhere. It’s a massively iconic set of movies already.
So, should you watch it? Yes. Absolutely. You wouldn’t really assume so at first glance, but there are some brutal scenes in this movie (or at least, the implication of them being brutal). It really is just a really enjoyable movie. Wicked: For Good earns 4 stars in my book.
