“Scream”, originally meant to be called “Scary Movie”, created in the 90s (1996), was a play on the classical horror genre and was about two high school students, (William) Billy Loomis and Stu Macher. It was produced by Cathy Konrad and Cary Woods and made by Dimension and Film. Other characters include: Tatum Riley, Sidney Chase, Casey Becker, Randy Meeks, Keeny Brown, Dewey Riley, and others. The film opens by introducing Billy and Stu, who share a love of horror movie classics, and they go on to turn their dreams into reality, beginning to kill classmates in their town. As the movie progresses, it leans into classic horror movie tropes, such as “the final girl” (Meaning the last person a girl is left alive with, after everyone else is dead). The movie continues as it shows the killings while both boys wear the Ghostface mask to hide their identities. After the first kill, they played everything out like a game. Both pairs, Stu and Billy, tend to rely on each other throughout the movie, with the planning of the kills, the phone calls, and the mask switchings. This movie is more aimed towards teenage audiences, but adults may enjoy this film as well. This movie may play a token to classic horror movies, but it’s always a horror movie in its own right as well.
– Spoilers Ahead:
During the murder scenes, we get a shot of Tatum Riley answering her phone while making popcorn. She answers it, and Ghostface ( we don’t know which boy it is at the moment) answers the phone by asking what her “favorite scary movie is.” ) Then led Tatum out of the house and ended up killing her using the garage door and a knife. During the movie scenes when the killing is involved, as I mentioned, they don’t really go into detail about who’s killing whom. Mostly, we can’t tell due to Billy and Stu wearing the Ghostface mask while doing the killings in the movies.
As the movie progresses, we learn more and more about Stu and Billy’s relationship and why they were going after certain people. One being a bully, another being Stu’s ex-girlfriend, etc., the list goes on and on.
– Spoiler Ahead:
When we meet Billy’s actual mom, we see “Sid” Sidney talking to his mother in annoyance at her claims of how hard it was to be a mother to Billy when, in reality, she had abandoned him. In the end, in my own opinion, I loved this movie a lot! I loved how they played out the story with the killings, as we didn’t know which of the two was doing each one until the end, when we found out who was doing each killing. The phone call scenes were funny, and the jokes and storyline were aimed just right for teenagers. The characters’ development and mental psyches were insane with details. In the end, this may be a turn-off for people who aren’t a fan of horror movies! So be warned, there is tons of blood. I rate this story 5 ghostface heads out of 5!
