Gen Z’s New Wave of Voters

How to Register to Vote
Gen Zs New Wave of Voters

‘Tis the season to make a difference in this world, and here is how to do it! With seniors beginning to turn 18, an important milestone is quickly approaching. A new wave of citizens will have a say in their nation’s leader. Regardless of political affiliation, voting is a crucial aspect of democracy.

Before deciding to register, one must be eligible and meet the requirements. First, you have to be a citizen of the United States. You also should meet your state’s residency requirements. Additionally, as mentioned previously, for the validity of your vote, you must be 18 years of age (although most states allow for registration before turning 18 if you will be by Election Day). The voter registration deadline is also a significant factor in your eligibility, so be sure to register before this deadline. In New Jersey, it is October 17, of this year.

Voter registration is rendered void if you are not a citizen of the United States, convicted of a felony, or currently serving time. Some mental disabilities may also affect your voting rights, but be sure to check with the rules of your state before you decide to register–competence is a big part of this, for no one can take away your right to vote based on their own idea of what it means to be “competent.” Furthermore, U.S. citizens who reside in U.S. territories cannot cast a ballot in the general presidential election.

There are three ways in which one can register: digitally, through the mail, or at a local election office. If you want to register online, you can visit Vote.gov and follow the instructions. To register by mail, fill out the Voter Registration Form. You can usually find them at a local library, school, or local office. Once registered, obtain an absentee ballot if you are unable to attend the polls in person. Be sure that your vote is postmarked by 8:00 PM on Election Day. Also, verify that it will be received by the 6th day since the polls closed. If you choose to register in person, locate your local election office, complete the Voter Registration Form, provide adequate identification, and submit your application. To vote early in person, most polls are open Mondays through Saturdays from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and usually 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Sundays. On election day, take care to cast your vote from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM.

No matter which method you choose, registering to vote is an integral part of being a responsible citizen. Protect your rights and express your voice, and congratulations on taking this important step towards strengthening and fostering democracy!
