Former Representative Mikie Sherrill has won the Governor’s race for New Jersey, and Mayor Christopher Vergano has won Wayne’s mayoral election. Here’s all you need to know about the results!
Christopher Vergano won his fifth election for mayor in Wayne against Democrat Don Pavlak Jr. and Independent Cathy Kazan. He will be joined by Republicans Jason DeStefano, Donnie DeDio, and Frank Pietropaolo as Council-at-Large victors. This will be DeStefano’s first reelection and DeDio and Pietropaolo’s first successes. Additionally, newly elected Joe Agnes and Keith Heyman will join reelected Barbara Rigoglioso on the Board of Education.
On a statewide scale, Mikie Sherril will be inaugurated as New Jersey’s second woman to be governor on January 20th, 2026. On November 20th, she resigned from her role as a Representative to prepare for the governorship. Incumbent New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy issued a writ of election for a special election to be held on April 16th, 2026 (preceded by primaries on February 5th). New Jersey’s 11th District, Sherril’s district, encompasses much of Wayne, so eligible voters (including some high school seniors) may consider voting in these elections to make their voices heard. 13 Democrats are running in the primaries along with one Republican. Remember to research to pick the best candidate before voting!
