To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th to October 15th, the Spanish IV and V classes taught by Señora Gutierrez at Wayne Valley recently went on an enriching field trip to Felician University. At Felician, the students watched two shows performed by the Hispanic Flamenco Ballet Arts and Dance Company. The first show, called “The Hispania American Show,” showcased the vibrant culture of Latin America through different types of music and dance. It began with the Cha Cha in Cuba, continued through Puerto Rico and Brazil, and ended with the Tango from Argentina, which featured popular songs like La Llorona, which many of us may have heard in the movie Coco. The second show, called “The Spanish Heritage Show,” focused specifically on the culture in Spain. Traditional dances such as the Pasodoble and Rumba were shown with classic props such as castanets and fans. Additionally, some students were allowed to go up on stage with the dancers and learn specific dances. Seniors Emily Chen and Anna Anisimenko were two of the lucky few who got to go up on stage and learn how to flamenco. They called the whole experience “a lovely display of Spanish culture” and greatly enjoyed going on the trip. Overall, the general attitude towards the trip was positive, with many students expressing their gratitude towards Señora Gutierrez for arranging it, as well as hoping for more trips in the future.
