To our friend, Rocco Sivolella

The summer edition of Smoke Signals is dedicated to the memory of freshman Rocco Sivolella who tragically passed away on May 17. In January, after his COVID-19 symptoms persistently worsened, he was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a rare blood cancer. He fought until the very end and never gave up hope.  Rocco leaves behind his family, his girlfriend, and countless friends—he truly touched the lives of everyone, even if you didn’t know him personally.

Over the past five months, the entire Wayne community banded together to “fight with Rocco.” This motto was splayed over t-shirts and on bracelets, which were sold to help fundraise for the Sivolella family. Additionally, over $85,000 was raised on a GoFundMe, and many sports teams and clubs at both Wayne high schools participated in additional fundraisers (including bake sales).

Rocco was a bright light that will continue to live on in our memories, our stories, and our hearts. He was gone too soon, and Wayne unites in support of the Sivolella family during this difficult time.
