If you’re on the lookout for a club that’s all about fun, friendship, and embracing different cultures, the Multicultural Club could be just what you need! It’s a great spot where students come together to explore different backgrounds, traditions, and, of course, enjoy some delicious food! The club is led by an awesome team: President Safiya Gabr, Vice President Shanna Zuk, Secretary Sharon Zhao, and Treasurer Ava Zambrano. They work hard to make the club a welcoming environment for everyone.
Each week, the club focuses on something new. Members vote on topics like fashion, food, music, art, or traditions from around the world. Sometimes we present our own culture, and other times, we research and explore new ones together. It’s a mix of learning and fun, and everyone always walks away with something cool they didn’t know before. Safiya shares, “We want students to feel comfortable expressing their culture.” She believes that the club helps break down stereotypes and allows students to connect through shared experiences and stories. “It creates a safe space where students feel heard,” she adds.
One of the best parts? The activities. The club does fun, hands-on projects that tie everything together. Once, we planned a pretend trip to a country of our choice, learning about its traditions, landmarks, and daily life. Another time, we created a giant art piece using different styles from around the world with each part of the picture representing a different cultural art form. Sharon believes this is what the club stands for, “I think it’s important for our school to have a multicultural club because it is not only interesting to learn about different cultures but also crucial for every culture to be accepted and treated equally.”
Of course, the food events are always a favorite. “You get to try a variety of foods from different cultures,” says Sharon, talking about the club’s famous potlucks. Each potluck focuses on a specific culture, and everyone brings a dish to share. It’s a delicious way to learn.
The Multicultural Club is a great spot for students to dive into and celebrate cultures from all over the world in a friendly and welcoming space. Sharon thinks the club is super interesting because it brings together a variety of cultural traditions and stories that you won’t usually find in your textbooks or classrooms. Safiya reminisced about one of her favorite times: a special Ramadan and Eid presentation where she felt really proud to see others genuinely interested and respectful of her culture. These kinds of moments really show how the club fosters learning, empathy, and connection among students from all walks of life.
If you’re on the fence about joining, Sharon suggests just popping into a meeting to check it out for yourself. She truly believes the Multicultural Club can be a memorable experience for anyone who’s ready to learn and connect with others. So whether you want to share your own background or are just curious about new traditions, the club is a fun and meaningful way to make friends and expand your horizons!
