As the days lengthen, the UV rises, and the butterflies reappear, we enjoy the summer. An elementary schooler with seven new friends, a high-school junior starting college applications, or a senior ready for their last summer before college—the summer has activities for everyone.
To enjoy the warm weather, relaxing (and tanning!) in a backyard is a great way to spend a few hours on a hot day. When the sun feels too strong, you can spend time in a pool as well. If you have a pool, invite friends to your house to enjoy the sun with some company; otherwise, find a friend who has a pool or even enjoy the Wayne Town Pool. If you are looking to leave Wayne, escaping for a weekend (or longer) to the beach—Long Beach Island, Myrtle Beach, Santa Monica, and countless others—provides a memorable experience: sleeping on the sand, jumping in the waves, walking on the boardwalk, and watching the sunset.
If you want to stay closer to home, taking small excursions around town, such as Packanack Lake, or through a park, like the Laurelwood Arboretum or High Mountain, are easy ways to fill your time while enjoying the sun. Picking up new skills is also an option, like learning to run a 5K, ride a bike, or playing tennis on an outdoor court. Also, try having a picnic on the grass to enjoy a meal and snacks under the sun, flowers, and birds. Invite some friends and you can make summer-themed drawings, beaded jewelry, or even discover a new hobby like crocheting or knitting. On a rainy day, you can enjoy these activities inside while watching a movie or listening to a summer playlist.
The summer also offers valuable time to get a first job. Many people try lifeguarding (at pools, lakes, or the ocean), serving ice cream (often at beaches), and even tutoring (for college applications, the SAT, or the ACT). Another way to spend the summer is to find an internship, which will give you valuable experience in an area of your choice, as well as helping prepare you for the future. Paid internships are especially beneficial because they offer invaluable experience along with money.
Regardless, summer brings two months of opportunities for all levels of relaxation or commitment. So whether you are a Freshman or Sophomore looking to enjoy the time, a Junior preparing to apply to college, or a Senior ready to have your last “high-school” summer, remember: enjoy yourself, and don’t forget sunscreen!
