Review on Kendrick Lamar’s new album Mr. Morales and the Big Steppers

Kendrick Lamar is back, 1855 days after his last release, DAMN. Mr. Morales and the Big Steppers is an artistic masterpiece to say the least; it discusses various topics that are prevalent within today’s society. Lamar is able to paint a beautiful story throughout this double-length album filled with generational trauma, LGBTQ+ struggles, and his own attempts to grow amid high expectations and heavy introspection. Many speculate that this will be the rapper’s final album, as he plans to retire from the music industry entirely. After listening to the album a few times, my stance on the genre of rap has changed. Lamar is able to compose thoughtful rhymes, coupled with well put-together beats, and tells a story within each song. Kendrick is able to differentiate himself a lot from many modern rappers through this album, and successfully solidify his name as one of the greatest modern-day rappers. Upon interviewing Wayne Valley student Trey Casey, he had this to say: “I can safely say that it didn’t disappoint. Kendrick took an approach where the album felt like an entire story through a mere 18 songs.” Mr. Morales and the Big Steppers is out now on Itunes, Spotify, and many other music-streaming platforms, and I would totally recommend this album to anybody who is interested in heavy topics spoken through intricate lyrics and amazing instrumentals.
