In the light of various complaints across the school, the end is nigh. At least this is the case for Canvas as the school is switching back to the well-trusted and practiced Google Classroom. Many students and teachers claim it is detrimental to learning and are grateful it will not return.
There is one catch to Canvas closing. As soon as the school year ends, all your information on it will be deleted unless you make sure to export it to your Google Drive. If you care about keeping records of your work, go to your settings and select “Download Submissions” to get a copy of your work. More information is available here.
In general, students were not very fond of Canvas. One student emphatically remarked, “Burn it.” Another reported “I hate it. It’s boring as …” The latter also shared, “It’s college level [and] I’m a sophomore so I don’t need college level stuff yet.” The price of Canvas is also an issue on some students’ minds as it is no secret that Wayne Schools is a little strapped for cash, yet they spent so much money on Canvas.
Some teachers are looking forward to Google Classroom. One claims, “I heard Canvas is a good platform, [and] I know it’s used a lot in colleges and universities.” However, he says, “I’m a fan of Google Classroom and more comfortable with Google Classroom.” Various other teachers have also expressed dislike of Canvas due to errors in posting assignments, submitting assignments, and it generally being difficult to navigate.
No one with a favorable view of Canvas was available for comment. For now, most of the school counts down the days until summer break and freedom from Canvas.
