Thunderbolts hit theaters on May 2, and the internet has been abuzz since. Is it worth a watch? Well, first of all, is it easy to follow? Is the plot well done? Are the characters fleshed out properly? Is it fun to watch at all? These are all questions I aim to answer.
Now, first off, is it worth a watch? I think that it absolutely is. Most people can agree that Marvel fell off after Avengers: Endgame (though it all started going downhill in Infinity Game). Well, then, consider this Marvel’s official comeback. Few movies have lived up to the old standards recently. I would consider citing Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness in this list. Thunderbolts, however, is a classic superhero movie. Obviously, nothing compares to the original Avengers, but this was an incredible movie, for all its worth. However, it gets quite confusing at times because the Marvel universe is so vast and interconnected. Even if you’re not looking for a classic superhero movie, this movie is just a fun watch. It’s enjoyable, it’s funny, but it also gets a bit more serious sometimes. Also, the cinematography is exceptional, which is expected considering the film was produced by none other than A24, one of the highest-achieving entertainment producers.
Is it easy to follow? Well…..as with any Marvel movie, there’s a certain amount of prerequisite knowledge to be had. It’s not absolutely necessary, of course. You get the movie regardless of whether or not you’ve seen all the movies and shows. Even if you don’t get the movie completely, it has a nice feel and, again, it’s funny.
The million-dollar question: Is the plot well done? For the first time in what feels like a million years, yes. This really may be the start of Marvel’s new age. After all, the Fantastic Four movie is coming out this summer, and Doomsday is expected to hit theaters in 2026. There won’t be any spoilers here, but this is the first genuinely compelling superhero movie I’ve seen in a while.
Is Thunderbolts fun to watch? Absolutely. The characters are likeable and the dialogue and scenes are all very well done. Even if you haven’t watched any Marvel movies, I think you’ll have fun with this one.
Overall, Thunderbolts receives 5 stars in my book. Truly a classic movie, and definitely the beginning of a new era of superhero movies.
