SDA–or Student Dance Association–is an extremely popular dance competition where around 140 participants are assigned to the Blue or White teams. Each team prepares four different dances including Jazz, Pom, Aerobics, and Tap. In late April, 3,000 people around Wayne come to watch these girls perform these fantastic dances for three nights, and of course, they watch them compete for first place. For the 2025 season, the theme “Cartoon Universe” was chosen by President Annabelle Mikhail and Vice President Charlotte English. The White Team’s dances were Fairly Odd Parents for Jazz, Flintstones for Pom, Dexter’s Laboratory for Aero, and Scooby Doo for Tap. Blue team’s dances were Jem & the Holograms for Jazz, Powerpuff Girls for Pom, the Jetsons for Aero, and Looney Tunes for Tap.
The team’s overalls are the heartbeat of their team, performing their own solo in each dance. Blue Team’s Overall Lily March says, “I love [SDA] because I get to meet the most hardworking girls.” White Team’s Overall Sanjana Jayanth adds, “SDA brings all kinds of girls together and truly makes a family out of them. We love each other and stick together no matter what.”
This year the winner of SDA was…the Blue Team! The first three places consisted of White Tap in third, Blue Aerobics in second, and Blue Tap in first. These dances were led by captains Nadia and Talia Qira, Deirdre Gonzalez and Alli Roth, and lastly Phoebe Phelan and Malia Destefano. White Pom took home the “Best Prop” award for their stone-aged Flintstones car. The awards “Best Poster’’ and “Best Costume” went to Blue Pom, “Best Music” was awarded to Blue Jazz, and “Best Captains Duo” was won by Blue Aerobics. All in all, this year’s performances were incredible and unforgettable. SDA 2026 will be even better, so make sure to come watch next year!
