Frank Darabont’s The Majestic starring Jim Carrey is a heartfelt tale of old small town America that explores the power of love and the magic of cinema. Frank Darabont has made great movies before like The Green Mile, a movie about identity and community.
The Majestic is set in the 1950s and follows a Hollywood writer named Peter Appelton that is played by Jim Carrey. After making a movie, he gets blacklisted by the FBI due to his alleged communist ties. He then gets in an accident, losing his memory, and is mistaken for a fallen soldier named Luke Trimble.
Jim Carrey is often known for his goofy, cartoonish impressions, but in this role, he demonstrates his capability as a dramatic actor. He balances both his comedy side with earnest emotion. Other characters in the movie are Harry Trimble–played by Martin Landau–who is grieving his son Luke Trimble’s death. His performance is deeply moving and helps with the emotional core of the movie. Laurie Holden plays Luke’s fiancée, Adelle Stanton, and she brings warmth and comfort to both the character and movie, adding more depth to the romantical genre of the movie.
The movie has great cinematic moments capturing the charm of the town and the things around it. The acting is on point, making the movie impactful. The length of the movie is not overly long but can fee; lengthy at times due to some scenes dragging the plot. While this movie is heart-touching to the audiences, it hasn’t achieved the same acclaim as Darabont’s other works. For fans of classic, old America, this could be an enjoyable movie. Overall, my rating is 3.5/5.
