As pink blossoms paint the trees and daylight increases, the weather offers many outdoor activities. Whether you put on a pair of overalls and a sun hat to dig around the garden, walk around your neighborhood streets to birdwatch, or lay in your backyard to tan, spring invites us all to get outside and enjoy the warm weather.
For a simple activity, grab a new book—or a favorite you’ve read fifteen times—and sit outside to read. Find a spot in your backyard, a park, or even outside the library (where you won’t run out of books!) and have a relaxing few hours of reading. For another calming morning or afternoon, try a new hobby outside, such as crafting, drawing, or crocheting. Grab your old can of chalk to make a driveway masterpiece!
If you want to add some more color to your house, buy seeds from stores like Home Depot and plant them in colored pots outside. Zinnias, Marigolds, Daffodils, and Geraniums are great options for beginners! Make sure to provide them with the proper nutrients, water, and sunlight, and you’ll soon have an array of flowers to decorate your space. To make your display more unique, paint on your ceramic or terracotta pots with acrylic paint!
Spring is the season of life, reflected in the new baby birds, bunnies, and squirrels around your neighborhood. Take a walk and bring a small notebook; when you see an animal or insect, try sketching it with its name. When you’ve finished, not only will you have a memory of your walk and what you saw, but you’ll also have some new creatures to research on a rainy day.
Since many fruits and vegetables are in season during the warmer months of spring and summer, a trip to your local farmer’s market is also a fun option. You can see how some crops are grown and picked while also enjoying the taste of local, fresh carrots, apricots, cherries, and strawberries!
To get your blood pumping, you might also enjoy an excursion on a flat or hiking trail. The Laurelwood Arboretum is a great spot to walk outside and enjoy views of the woods, lakes, and animals. It also displays pieces of art, especially statues, and it often has exhibits for Wayne students’ artworks! Also in Wayne is the High Mountain Park Preserve, an exciting hiking spot with a great summit view. It has paths of varying difficulty, making it a perfect location for both beginners and the more experienced.
No matter what you choose—a lazy weekend or an exciting excursion—get outside and enjoy the Spring’s warm weather!
