Every year the Super Bowl is one of the biggest games in sports every year and along with being the biggest game in America, it is also one of the most popular events to throw a party. Over 20 million Americans will watch the big game at parties with an overall 100 million Americans. With that many people watching there comes a high chance that some of those people will have no idea what is happening on screen. If that’s you this will be the easy guide on how to understand the superbowl.
1) Identify the room
Let’s say that there is a red team and blue team playing in the Super Bowl and everyone is dressed in blue. Since you have no idea what’s going on and don’t want your lack of knowledge to show, just root for the blue team. If you know in advance then wear blue but always wear neutral colors if you don’t know what your party is gonna sway. After picking a team to root for, don’t switch; no one likes a bandwagon. After that, try to know the quarterback (QB) of the team you’re rooting for. He is the most popular player by far on every team so knowing his name is not a bad idea.
2) Know some rules
When I say this I don’t mean study the entire rule book as if you are studying for the SAT. This are the most simple and important rules to know
- You get 4 downs (trys) to get a first down(10 yards)(yellow line)
-Line of scrimmage is the line that separates the offense and defense.(blue line)
-Crossing the endzone will give a team a touchdown worth 6 points and after scoring they could kick a PAT(point after touchdown) or go for 2 which they will put the ball 2 yards away from the endzone and give them one shot to score.
-Field goal is worth 3 is scored after kicking the ball through the big yellow poles.
These are the most important rules that you must know. If anything else happens that is not this list, go to the bathroom and look it up. You can say you have a stomach bug to hide your lack of knowledge.
3) Go with the noise
Sometimes in football big plays happen and they are really fun for people that know what is happening. Identify what the group does as a celebration for a score or big play and follow along. If they cheer, cheer with them. If they start clapping, clap with them. This can go the other way if something bad happens. If they start to yell at the tv, yell at the tv. Things will get loud, so it’s ok to go outside and take a breath before going back into the chaos. Remember that even though you don’t know what’s happening, what’s important is to have a little fun and not to make a complete fool of yourself with your lack of America’s favorite pastime.
4) DON’T BE ANNOYING
This is the most important step by far. You can forget everything I just said but if you remember this you will be fine. The reason why people watch football is because it is fun , so making fun of it at a football party about football is a pretty stupid idea. Here are some other things not to say at a Super Bowl party:
– Don’t call it “sportsball” – Saying this makes you sound like Ryan from the High School Musical before he became likeable.
– Do not complain how much football players get paid – We get it nurses and teachers do a lot and deserve more but it’s not a nurses and teachers party. It is a party for football.
– Do not say your here for the commercials – If you really went to parties to see ads, watch youtube without pressing the skip button.
– Don’t freak out over the halftime show – I’m not saying to not enjoy it. I’m saying it’s pretty weird that you were loud for the songs and not for the game itself.
– Don’t call it stupid – In reality football is about giving people mental disorders for the rest of their life but doesn’t mean you should spoil it for others.
– Don’t say the refs are trying their best – No one likes them. Don’t make them not like you.
With all of these tips and tricks, having fun at a Super Bowl party will be a breeze. Just remember the most important tip. Have fun.
