With the 2024 presidential election right around the corner, the results of the polls are at the forefront of almost every American’s mind. One way or another, the results of this election will have drastic effects on the future of our nation; it seems that the country has never been so divided over two political candidates. Even the campaign commercials seem to be at a record high, and ads for both parties flood almost every media source. The entire nation, torn in two, seems to be holding its breath in anticipation of the outcome.
This year, the Democratic presidential nominee is Kamala Harris. She took over after Joseph Biden stepped down due to his age. Harris has the support and endorsements of many people including former president Barack Obama, as well as Republicans both Liz and Dick Cheney, Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan and Former Sen. Jeff Flake.
Former Republican presidential Donald Trump is the nominee for the Republican party. He has the backing of people like Elon Musk, Governor of Texas Greg Abbott, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene
Throughout the months leading up to election day, both nominees toured the country, speaking at rallies and stopping at destinations along their campaign trails. Both candidates set their sights on the swing states. Swing states are notoriously undecided in each election, and their electoral votes can “swing” the election in one direction or the other. These states include Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Trump wants to “end inflation and make America affordable again.” He has promised to deliver lower interest rates and he has proposed new 10-20% tariffs on most foreign goods with even higher ones on those from China. These tariffs will support a number of tax cuts including the extension of his 2017 cuts which mostly helped the wealthy.
Harris claims that her day-one priority would be to reduce food and housing costs for working class families. She promises to ban price-gouging on groceries, help first-time home buyers and provide incentives to increase housing supply. She has also touts policies that would ease the tax burden on families, including an expansion of child tax credits.
Harris has also made abortion rights central to her campaign, and she continues to advocate for legislation that would enshrine reproductive rights nationwide.
In contrast, Trump appointed to the judges to Supreme Court while president who were pivotal in overturning the constitutional right to an abortion, a 1973 ruling known as Roe v Wade. He and the judges returned the matter to the states.
Trump promises to seal the border by completing the construction of a wall and increasing enforcement. He has also promised a mass deportation of undocumented migrants.
During her time as Vice President, Harris backed a bipartisan border bill. While campaigning, she has reminded the public of her time as a prosecutor in California taking on human traffickers.
