Why students should take Italian class?
Every student who steps foot in Wayne Valley is required to take two years of a language class to graduate. To fulfill this requirement, take Italian! Throughout the class, you will be exposed to not only the language, but the culture and lifestyle of Italians. While learning the language is the primary goal of the class, our Italian teachers emphasize the importance of understanding the roots of the country. Learning the proper grammar and vocabulary of a language may seem boring, but Italian students are exposed to the language in a variety of ways. If you decide to continue the course past Italian one and two, you will find yourself reading, writing, and understanding the language better than you thought possible. Our Italian teachers are even planning future trips to Italy!
Of the three world language classes offered at Wayne Valley, Italian class has seen the most changes in the past year. Professoressa (Prof) Iannacco has taken over the Italian III class this year and has put her own unique touch on the curriculum while sustaining the values taught by Prof Pederialli last year. Prof Pederialli taught many students how to put Italian sentences together in Italian II, and Prof Iannacco is now emphasizing how students pronounce those sentences. New students in Italian will be introduced to basic principles of the language, which will be advanced along with new topics as you progress through Italian II, III, IV and V. You’ll not only acquire language skills but also delve into Italian culture and valuable life lessons. These life lessons include quotes like, “To know yourself, you must seek unfamiliar relations and territory,” from Prof Iannacco.
Students will learn about Italian history including Michelangelo’s artwork and ancient Roman architecture. On the other hand, students can expect to learn about current Italian culture, like music videos by Italian artist “Fedez.” By listening to music, reading current articles, and watching videos centered around Italian culture, students pick up on new words and add them to their vocabulary. All in all, students will not only come out of Italian class every day with an understanding of a new language, but a new understanding of life as a whole.
