Relay for Life

This year’s annual Relay For Life charity event will begin at 3pm on Saturday, May 16th, and conclude at 3am on Sunday, May 17th. Although the event will be hosted by Wayne Valley, and tents will be set up near the track, all Wayne students are encouraged to sign up and join teams with their friends. When students sign up, they have the opportunity to raise money, and all of the multiple teams compete to raise as much as they can. The team that raises the most money gets their own Port-A-Potty for the event. This year, Wayne’s Relay For Life fundraising goal is $100,000. All of the money that participants raise will be donated to the American Cancer Society, an organization that works to research cancer, improve treatment for patients, and eventually find a cure.

During the twelve hours of Relay For Life, several events take place. The opening ceremony occurs at 3pm, and is shortly followed by the Survivor and Caregiver walk. Luminaria, which is a ceremony of remembrance and hope, will be held at 9pm. At this time, several candles are lit, and they shine in honor of those who battle cancer and in memory of those who have been lost. The closing ceremony will take place at 3am.

From 3pm to 3am, one member from each team must walk the track at all times—the more people on the team, the less time a person has to walk, since all team members rotate who is walking. Each participant is encouraged to raise at least $100 individually, and if they do not do so, they have to leave the event by 11pm.

Relay For Life is an amazing opportunity not only to spend time with friends and family, but to work together to create an amazing impact in our community and on the lives of others.
