If you have scrolled through TikTok or walked through the halls of Wayne Valley, you have most likely heard someone say a new slang term that you do not understand. Whether it’s a cryptic “six seven” joke that comes with the weird hand motion, the term “forty-one” said for no reason, people saying they have “aura” or they are “aura farming,” it can be both confusing and difficult to keep up with a conversation if slang or trend words are constantly involved. Although these terms are harmless, it is important to fully understand them.
First, the term students are constantly saying today is “six seven.” From its constant usage, to teachers accidentally saying it and causing their students to laugh, it has become part of all of our lives. Although everyone says “six seven,” there are a small number of people who actually know where it came from and what it really means. Defined by Merian Webster, “Six seven (or 67 or 6 7, etc.) is a nonsensical expression used especially by teens and tweens that is connected to a rap song and also to a 6′ 7″ tall basketball player.” “Six seven” originated back in December 2024 when singer Skrilla released his infamous song “Doot Doot (67),” featuring the iconic line. The specific line immediately gained popularity on TikTok, as people began to use the audio in their reels. Eventually, “six seven” evolved into a popular meme associated with NBA player LaMelo Ball‘s height, which is six feet, seven inches. Due to this explosion in popularity, everyone is using this term as much as they can, paired with an up-and-down hand motion. However, it means absolutely nothing and is just used for comedic relief.
Second, some people are saying this number can replace “six seven,” as the number forty-one is trending as we speak. The trend started from a song by artist Blizzy Boi. Although the song was released on August 28th, 2021, “41 Song (Saks Freestyle)” has gotten a tremendous amount of popularity over this year. In his song, Blizzy Boi raps about having “41 of everything” and how he is “41 years old.” The term is rapidly gaining popularity on TikTok, and some people argue that forty-one is a better number than six seven. Despite this, the two numbers have the same meaning: they mean nothing and are simply used to make people laugh.
Finally, a common term heard around school is the term “aura,” a classic word used to describe how cool someone is or what their vibe is. A person’s perceived charisma, social attraction, coolness, or charm can all signal someone’s aura, and the term can also be expressed in a point system. It is also important to note that “aura-maxxing” and “aura-farming” both have the same meaning, and both mean to gain aura and aura points. Examples of “aura-farming” and “aura-maxxing” are making the game-winning shot in a basketball game, having a good comeback line to someone insulting you, or impressing your crush. Overall, “aura” is a good thing to have, as it positively defines a human and praises their personality.
To summarize, the new slang words such as “six seven,” “forty-one,” and “aura” have no malicious intent; rather, they serve as social bonding for select generations of society. Although these terms are widely used and exaggerated, understanding them helps us connect to culture. Despite their lack of meaning, they bring comedic relief and are valued by younger generations today.
