It’s that time of the year: Halloween season. What to watch? There are hundreds of movies from which can be picked, ranging from “kind of fall-ish,” to “full Halloween theme.” Directed by Tim Burton, “Beetlejuice” is widely hailed as one of the Halloween cult classics. Is it worth a watch? A re-watch?
Now, the CGI for this movie is not the best. There isn’t too much of it used, so it doesn’t matter much. You have to consider that the film was made in 1988—what can you expect? Technically speaking, the claymation is very good, and the set design is wonderful (I mean, there’s so much thought that went into the house throughout the entire movie). That being said, the bad CGI definitely isn’t a deal breaker. In fact, it enhances the weird, campy vibes throughout the entire movie.
How’s the plot? Well, no spoilers here, but the plot basically follows a recently-deceased couple navigating their way through the afterlife when they find that their house has been sold to a new family. It’s interesting, it’s gripping. Is it the most amazing plot ever? No, not really. But does the plot work really well with all the visuals in the movie, making it a super enjoyable film? Yes, yes it does, not to mention the A-list actors and perfectly curated costumes, interior design, and overall aesthetic.
Overall, it’s a fun movie to watch, especially with a friend. It’s funny, it’s kind of weird, it’s a bit “millennial-cringe.” But, you know, when you’re having fun, you can overlook all of these things. So, would I watch it again? Yes. Would I recommend it? Also yes. All in all, this movie gets four and a half stars from me. But, if you’re in the mood for something even less serious, a watch of Adam Sandler’s “Hubie Halloween” is always a good idea.
