When Hurricane Milton made landfall on October 9th, it caused a lot of damage, affecting more than 3 million people and leading to an estimated cost of 50 billion dollars. In 2024 there have been a total of nine hurricanes, some back to back, causing rainy weather for the states neighboring to where the hurricanes are hitting.
First responders quickly went to work, helping those in need after the hurricane. Their fast actions gave people who were affected some sort of support and saved some people from getting injured. First responders faced different settings while helping the community out such as rescuing people from flooded areas, helping families who had been separated from each other because of the storm reunite, and helping out the shelters.
Environmental teacher Doc G says that “A great number of people from our state were impacted by Hurricane Sandy back in October of 2012, myself included. Power was out for days and in some cases for weeks. Finding open gas stations was a challenge, roads were damaged, homes flooded; especially those near rivers. A friend of mine from Keansburg, NJ had her home swept away while her neighbor’s were spared. It was a devastating storm.” This gives us an idea on how dangerous and chaotic hurricanes can be for people. She also adds that it will “take months or more to fully recover.”
Environmental teacher Mr Blake says that ” We see hurricanes happen back to back due to global warming” to add Doc G says “warm water from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean evaporates which can create storm clouds and ultimately form hurricanes, the warmer the oceans are, the more likely hurricanes will form.”
To ensure that people stay safe during a hurricane people are advised to stock up on necessities such as food and water and seek shelter. If the storm watcher can see that the hurricane will be extremely dangerous and life threatening they advise people to evacuate.
Even though these hurricanes have a negative impact on people it is important for people in these communities to come together and help each other out in times of need.
