Little Women Recap

On the weekend of April 14, Wayne Valley Theatre performed their annual school musical. This year, it was a classic family favorite: Little Women. The musical takes place in Massachusetts during the Civil War. Senior Cheryl Lancellotti starred as Jo March, the second oldest March sister who dreams of becoming a writer, though she often fights with her little sister, Amy. Starring alongside Cheryl were Craig Legras as Laurie, Alex Heerema as Meg March, Maddie Hohmann as Beth March, Adriana Cercone as Marmee, and Charlotte English as Amy March. The cast beautifully sang and danced their way through the musical, portraying the girls’ lives and relationships as they grow from childhood to adulthood.

In the first half of the musical, the four March girls live with their mother, Marmee, while their father is away at war. They soon meet Laurie, the grandson of the rich man who lives next door, and all the girls become close friends with him, especially Jo. Cheryl and Craig capture the playful and fun relationship between Jo and Laurie. However, Laurie eventually declares his love for Jo and proposes, and Jo rejects him. The second half takes place months later, when Jo has moved to a boarding house in NYC to teach. She continues to write her stories, full of action and sword fights acted out by the musical’s ensemble, and falls in love with the professor. Amy and Laurie also fall in love and get married, but tragedy strikes when Beth falls sick and dies, which junior Maddie Hohmann marks with the heartbreaking song “Some Things Are Meant To Be.” In the end, Jo finally gets her book published and stays with the professor, after which the cast came out on stage to give their final bows.
