Living the Same Life Everyday

March 17, 2023

In the movie Groundhog Day, Phil, a weatherman, is stuck reliving the same day over and over again after going to a town called Punxsutawney to do a report about Groundhog Day. Phil relives this day many times before he can actually escape the loop and go back to his normal life.

Many people today feel like they’re also in the same loop: wake up, go to work/school, come home, go to bed, repeat. As a student, it can get challenging to only have the weekend to yourself (probably not if you have sports) until you have to get back to a routine on the weekday. It can be even more discouraging to hear that it doesn’t get any better as you get older—school hours are just replaced with work hours.

Throughout the day, we just distract ourselves from these issues by hanging around our friends, switching through social media apps even when there’s nothing new to see, and sleeping—only to wake up and see the same routine is still there when you wake up.

The title of a forum thread reads, “I feel depressed that [every day] is the same day. The same routine I’ve been doing for years! Is there a type of depression for how I’m feeling?” It has comments with keywords such as “existential crisis” and “depression.”

The effects of doing the same thing every day can seem small at first but can build up into a bigger issue over time. Instead of letting yourself fall into a cycle similar to that, do small things you enjoy that you know will lift your spirits—which could help you in the long run. Instead of looking at the boring week ahead of you, focus on exciting upcoming events like your birthday, graduation, a school dance, etc.

Taking life one day at a time can help you realize how rewarding life can be and can help you more than you know.
