Take This Class: Chorus

January 4, 2023

When choosing which electives to take, students often overlook the classes relating to music education. Whether that is due to a stigma around the programs or a lack of musical interest can be debated. However, those who do choose to participate in such programs reap many rewards. Chorus is one of these classes that is often ignored, however, this class in particular offers students a chance to relax, be in a non-academic environment for part of their day, and learn all the ins-and-outs of vocal music. It is taught by Ms. Russoniello, a seasoned choral director who has worked at Wayne Valley for 15 years. “Ms. Russ” as her students refer to her, is very musically gifted. Yet perhaps more importantly, she is a friend to all. Ms. Russ is never afraid to call it like it is, but is always there for students to lean on. She never fails to be compassionate and wise, which is why so many have found a home in her classroom. Not only is the class taught by a phenomenal teacher, it is filled with welcoming, funny, and talented students who end up feeling like family. I’ve taken chorus for the past four years, and have been taught by Ms. Russ for each one, including when I was a student at Anthony Wayne Middle School. Personally, I’ve grown as a student, musician, and as a person while under her guidance, and I would encourage all to take a chance and discover if chorus is the right place for them too.
