Girls Track Team

Wayne Valley has done it again, this year girls track was fortunate enough to make it past the first round of states. In fact, a few athletes on the Wayne Valley Girls Track Team qualified for the State Group Championship meet on June 3rd and 4th. In order to attend, the girls had to finish 6th place, or better, in their events during State Sectionals. These girls have been working hard all season and now it will all pay off. Wayne Valley was seeded 23 out of 24 high schools, but they did not let this discourage them. Freshman Julia Philip, Sophomores Hannah Sikorski and Meghan Corso, and Senior Jenn Cannarella ran in the 4 by 1 relay. Also, Meghan Corso participated in the 100 hurdles, and Senior Olivia Pantale threw discus and javelin which she is know for.

Going back to the 4 by 1 relay, the girls did not perform as they hoped. During a hand-off between two girls, the baton was dropped, and the team was disqualified. This resulted in the girls being disappointed within themselves. However, Coach Schulman relieved them and told them that it could happen to anyone. Although the 4 by 1 relay did not go as planned, individually the girls did well in their performances. Sophomore Meghan Corso was very pleased with her outcome in hurdles, considering she placed higher than she expected. In discus, senior Olivia Pantel threw her personal best of 129-4 and ended up taking third. Olivia will be continuing onto the Meet of Champions on June 8th for discus and javelin, but she won’t stop there. After graduating, she will attend Saint John’s University and continue to throw javelin.
